Recently, we have seen the NFL’s team being roasted for changing their logo designs. Top of the list stays Los Angeles Rams. However, the team of NFL that was roasted the most in the old school way was San Francisco 49ers because of the change they tried to inculcate in their logo design back in the 90's.
The most expected thing that happened was that the fans rejected the new logo design almost immediately. But the form of criticism was different. The bashing was not done through social media; instead, fans wrote letters to newspapers and drowned the organization with phone calls. According to Jerry Walker, the 49ers Public Relations Director in 1983-93, stated, “The logo was not accepted as we thought. Our phones were ringing off the hook. We are so thankful was the era prior to Facebook and Instagram, so we didn’t get raked over the coals. However, several newspapers wrote stories about the change. And on the next day, you know a riot was there by the fans.” Knowing that they had made a mistake and looking at an overwhelming adverse reaction, the members of the SF 49ers tried convincing then-owner Eddie DeBartolo about their mistake, asking him to undo it. “We sent (DeBartolo) faxes of the story. The very next day, he called and inquired about the situation, and then asked for my opinion. All I said was, Mr. D, I think we should change back. And the very next day, we decided to change back.” Walker further added, “Press releases were sent out announcing reverting of old SF logo. The bottom line is that the organization heard what its fans said. Instead of sticking to their verdict, the organization took back their decision and became heroes in the eyes of their fans.
