The real goal and purpose for Detroit Design 139 is to have a collective event-conversation about the ten core design principles for Detroit’s urban transformation. There are countless innovative projects in this year’s exhibition that would take place across 4 major points of the city. These spots include a laundromat/coffee shop, a data portal enhancing public accessibility and a former detergent/car wash factory in the old city.
Detroit has always been famous and renowned for its design-forward/flexible quality. So much so, that in 2015 UNESCO designated Detroit as the ‘City of Design’, the only US city to get this title. A state of art, architectural heaven with an automotive-futuristic design with boulevards that are built to rival architectural masterpieces like that of Milan and Paris. This has also been a revolution of positive image building for the city- a change for its notoriety from corruption, bankruptcy and mass foreclosures. There are new cranes in Detroit where incredible new transformations are occurring; transforming downtown Detroit into a whole new landscape of art reformations. Downtown Detroit, which was not too long ago on dear life support where its construction and creative city development was concerned, is now a prime example of modern redesigning. A combination of political, business and local design advocates has come together to bring a shiny turnaround for this year’s design innovation, all across the city’s 139 square miles. In August they launched their own second exhibition ‘Inclusive Futures’ that highly focused on utilizing 60 local projects into a string of effective, productive and well-designed inclusive processes within the main city of Detroit. All the residents of the city will have access to visualized information maps, permit applications, information of city-owned land and a range of other useful sets.
